UEFA Explains Controversial Arsenal Penalty Cancellation in Atletico Madrid Draw
UEFA clarifies the VAR decision to overturn Arsenal's penalty against Atletico Madrid. Read Mikel Arteta's reaction and expert analysis on Kora Live.

UEFA has issued an official statement as the governing body justifies the Arsenal penalty cancellation during the first leg of the Champions League semi-final against Atletico Madrid. The match, which ended in a 1-1 draw, was overshadowed by a controversial refereeing decision in the closing stages of the game.
Substitute Eberechi Eze went down inside the penalty area in the 78th minute following a challenge from Atletico Madrid defender David Hancko. While referee Danny Makkelie initially awarded the spot-kick, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) summoned him to the monitor, leading to the decision being overturned.
UEFA's brief justification stated: "Atletico player number 17 did not commit a foul against the opponent." The governing body declined to provide further details regarding the decision-making process, despite VAR protocols stating intervention should only occur in cases of clear and obvious errors.
Refereeing Expert: Overturn Was Not Justified
Former referee Dermot Gallagher criticized the decision, noting a lack of conclusive evidence to reverse the call. "Once the penalty is awarded, there must be definitive proof to cancel it. One angle shows clear contact on Eze's foot without the defender touching the ball," Gallagher remarked to the media.
Gallagher added that the VAR official appeared to over-analyze the footage, asserting that the incident did not meet the threshold of a clear error required to override the on-field official during this high-stakes Champions League VAR controversy.
Mikel Arteta Reaction: "Completely Unacceptable"
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expressed his fury, describing the incident as unacceptable. Speaking to TNT Sports, he said: "I have watched the footage 13 times; there is clear contact. Overturning this decision goes against the spirit of the rules and has altered the course of the tie."
Both teams now look ahead to the second leg to decide who advances to the final. Fans are already anticipating the Atletico Madrid vs Arsenal return fixture, amid ongoing discussions regarding the impact of officiating on the tournament's outcome.
